December 19, 2022 — The James Irvine Foundation Board of Directors approved seven grants totaling $14.6 million last week. The Foundation also approved $20.5 million in grants this quarter that did not require board approval.  

The grants primarily support the Foundation’s four initiatives focused on working Californians: Better Careers, Fair Work, Just Prosperity, and Priority Communities. More information about all grants can be found in the Foundation’s database here.  

The board-approved grants include: 

Better Careers 

Foundation for California Community Colleges  

A 30-month grant of $2 million to support the creation and expansion of inclusive, equitable, and accessible apprenticeship programs for Inland Empire residents facing barriers to opportunity, particularly women and BIPOC communities, through an entity such as LAUNCH Apprenticeship Network, a regional apprenticeship intermediary.  

Fair Work 

Maintenance Industry Labor-Management Cooperation Trust Fund  

A three-year grant of $1.6 million to support worker leadership and industry engagement that improves working conditions for low-wage, non-union janitorial workers in California.  

Mixteco Indigena Community Organizing Project  

A three-year grant of $2.38 million for general operating support.  

Just Prosperity  

Chinese Progressive Association  

A two-year grant of $2 million to increase civic engagement of low-income Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders by strengthening the capacities of emerging civic engagement projects across California, through an entity such as the AAPI for Civic Empowerment Education Fund.  

Community Partners  

A two-year grant of $2.3 million to deepen the power building, advocacy, and data research of Tribal communities and Native organizations in California, through an entity such as the California Native Vote Project.  

2023 Leadership Awards  

Capitol Impact Consulting, LLC 

A one-year grant of $2.25 million for the grants associated with the 2023 Leadership Awards.  

A one-year grant of $2.14 million to administer The James Irvine Foundation Leadership Awards program through Capitol Impact.
