Tia Hicks was appointed Program Associate in June 2014. Prior to joining the Foundation, Tia was a 2012 Teach For America Corps Member where she taught middle school English and History for the Oakland Unified School District. While teaching, Tia simultaneously served as a Policy and Research Intern for the District 3 Office of the Oakland City Council, where she conducted policy research, supported the development of policy recommendations, and represented the office in community forums. She is also a 2015 Boards and Commissions Leadership Institute (BCLI) Fellow, a leadership development program through Urban Habitat that trains local social justice leaders to be advocates for low-income communities of color on boards and commissions throughout the Bay Area. A native of Oakland, Tia graduated magna cum laude from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science in urban and regional studies as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Africana studies. She also holds a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from Loyola Marymount University.
