Each month Irvine Foundation staff attend events around the state, and sometimes country, to enhance our work in the Foundation’s program areas and philanthropy. We’re launching this monthly blog series to keep you in the know of the conferences, panels and workshops where you can connect with staff and/or follow the conversations online that matter to you.

Where will Irvine be in September?

Editor’s Note: The following letter from Irvine Foundation Treasurer and Chief Investment Officer John Jenks is part of the Foundation’s 2013 Annual Report, released next month.

The calendar year of 2013 was an extraordinary year for the James Irvine Foundation’s investment portfolio. In my letter one year ago, I wrote about how good 2012 had been and why, even though 2013 had started strongly, I cautioned that above average returns were not likely to persist. My logic was that, in the long-term, Irvine’s investment portfolio is a claim on increased global economic activity and the ensuing business profits. In 2012, market returns were much better than economic activity might suggest. Returns were driven by increased valuations, rather than increased profits or economic activity, and that was not likely to continue and could even reverse. It is with some hesitation that I repeat those very words in reference to the success of 2013 and renew my caution that expectations of outsized investment returns need to be dampened.

Irvine has a fairly aggressive payout target (5.5 percent of average asset) and therefore an aggressive earnings target to support that payout. The big challenge for the investment program is to maintain a large long-term exposure to global economic activity to earn more than 5.5 percent plus the rate of inflation, while also reducing risk so that Irvine can tolerate years when global economic activity declines, or, as inevitably will happen, market returns deviate negatively from economic activity.

The James Irvine Foundation Board of Directors approved $9.1 million in grants at its quarterly meeting last week. Of the five approved grants, two are within California Democracy and three are in our Youth program.

Here are some highlights of a few of the new grants:

Voter and Civic Engagement — Our California Democracy program made a $900,000 grant to PICO California, as part of our Voter and Civic Engagement priority, to conduct coordinated voter outreach in partnership with its 19 affiliates statewide toward the goal of directly contacting 150,000 infrequent voters prior to state elections and engaging new and infrequent voters in other civic activities between election cycles. The goal of the Voter and Civic Engagement priority is to achieve a California electorate more representative of the state’s population and public decision-making informed by a broad cross-section of Californians.

If you’re not active on social media, chances are you’re missing an opportunity to connect with the people who care about your work—whether that’s a potential funder, a peer organization, or someone who’s simply interested in learning more about your organization.

Here are three ways that non-profits can build their social media presence:

Editor’s Note: Foundational Knowledge is an occasional series on News & Insights, providing three bullet points on a topic of interest to Irvine’s partners and grantees.

Technology is changing the landscape of the social sector and continues to be a key to success in social change. But resource challenges and lack of technology expertise often serve as a hurdle in making this change happen for non-profits.

Here are three things that social sector leaders can do to make technology a partner, not just a resource, in bringing social change:

  • Do your work in the cloud
Working in the cloud allows you to become nimble and agile, making collaboration simple. Examples of tools for this include:

  • Leverage video chats to build face-to-face connections
Tools like Skype, FaceTime & Google Plus Hangouts offer multiple free ways to conduct online meetings and webinars.

  • Support training for accidental techies
There are many online options for e-learning, as well as locals groups like Meetup.com that offer technology topics and general education for non techies in non-profits.

You don’t need to make big investments to leverage technology in this journey of social change.
