About the Award > Goals & Selection Criteria

The James Irvine Foundation Leadership Awards celebrate the ability of individuals to make a difference to California's future and spotlight the promising solutions they are advancing.

By providing substantial resources to the projects directed by these leaders and by boosting their visibility, we aim to strengthen the capacity of award recipients to fulfill their goals and to share with others their successful program strategies.

The goals of The James Irvine Foundation Leadership Awards are to:

  • Offer significant resources and visibility, each year, to programs that are effectively addressing social concerns, thus contributing to the growth and sustainability of these proven strategies.
  • Provide key stakeholders in various issue areas with an understanding of innovative and effective approaches for addressing key concerns.
  • Inform state and local policymakers about promising approaches for addressing important state issues, ultimately contributing to better public policies.

Selection criteria

We invite you to nominate an individual, or a group of individuals working as a leadership team, for a James Irvine Foundation Leadership Award. We seek nominees who have not been extensively recognized for their work through other awards programs. We encourage you to identify a leader whose work is:

  • Significant: The leader's work addresses an issue that is critical to California's future, and the issue is anticipated to affect the quality of life of a substantial number of Californians into the future.
  • Effective: The leader has been highly effective in achieving positive change. His or her work has a measurable record of accomplishment.
  • Innovative: The leader is advancing an innovative strategy that directly improves people's lives. The work represents a leap in creativity or a fundamental departure from usual practice.
  • Inclusive: The leader helps build bridges among people with differing viewpoints or different backgrounds.

The mission of The James Irvine Foundation is to expand opportunity for the people of California to participate in a vibrant, successful and inclusive society.
