Vice Chancellor, University of California, Merced
David Hosley was appointed as Vice Chancellor for University Relations at University of California, Merced in February 2010. In this role, Hosley oversees all aspects of university development, including fundraising and trustee relations, as well as government relations and communications.
Previously, Hosley served as President of the Great Valley Center. Prior to that position, Hosley was President and General Manager of KVIE Public Television for ten years. The station serves viewers from Chico to Merced. While leading KVIE, Hosley created New Valley, a series on the future of the Central Valley, and cofounded California Connected, which promoted citizen engagement in the future of the state. Before that, he held management positions at KCSM and KQED, public stations in the San Francisco Bay Area, and was a producer, reporter and anchor at news radio stations in San Francisco, New York and Miami.
Hosley has been active in regional planning efforts, serving on the boards of Valley Vision, the Sacramento Asian-Pacific Chamber of Commerce, Tierra Del Oro Girl Scouts and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. He is Chair of the Dean’s Advisory Council for the College of Agriculture and Environmental Science at UC Davis, and is a trustee of the UC Davis Foundation. Hosley serves on the board of the Sacramento Metro Chamber and was recently honored as their volunteer of the year.
Hosley holds a master’s in communications from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in sociology from Columbia University. He has written a book on the history of foreign correspondence on radio during World War II, and co-authored Hard News, on the history of women in broadcast journalism. Hosley has taught at the University of Florida, Florida International University and Stanford, where he most recently taught strategic management in the nonprofit environment at the Graduate School of Business.
