To enhance understanding by public and private funders of key trends and issues in the San Joaquin Valley, Inland Empire and Los Angeles County.

A key strategy for Irvine in its priority regions of the San Joaquin Valley, the Inland Empire and Los Angeles County is to commission research that will illuminate emerging trends and issues. We believe that relevant, accessible and objective information should be disseminated broadly to help public and private funders focus their resources and better serve the residents of these regions. Our goal is to increase the kind of awareness and understanding that will ultimately stimulate interest in greater philanthropic giving to these areas.

Illustrative projects include:

• Research from the Public Policy Institute of California on demographic trends and related education and workforce considerations in the Inland Empire that will be published in spring 2008
• A grant awarded to the University of San Francisco Institute for Nonprofit Organization Management to create and disseminate two reports on the location, importance, and capacity of the nonprofit sector in the Inland Empire and San Joaquin Valley, with a target publication date of spring 2008
• An Irvine-funded report on the regional disparities of foundation giving in California published in fall 2006
