Matthew Kelemen was appointed Senior Program Officer for Youth in February 2007. Prior to joining
the Foundation, Matthew spent five years on the senior staff of the San Francisco Unified School
District, most recently as the Executive Director for Policy and External Affairs. In this capacity,
he oversaw communications and local governmental affairs for the school district, managed
relationships with key partner organizations, and supervised the district’s student nutrition services
department. Matthew launched and spearheaded numerous policy initiatives and long-range planning
efforts focused on issues such as high school reform, principal leadership development, increasing
overall enrollment and building the capacity of school site governance teams. Prior to his work
and studies in California, Matthew served as a policy analyst in the office of the State
Superintendent of Schools in Maryland and staffed a gubernatorial commission on school finance
in Maryland. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Policy from Brown University and a
